According to the Sunday Times (UK), Li Ning Co. considered buying Umbro, Li Ning is a giant retailer and wholesaler in China. It is now looking at other options, including licensing agreements, the Sunday Times newspaper reported. The paper said Li Ning made an informal takeover approach to Umbro this summer but decided against a full-scale takeover after talks.
Nike is to open a 9,000-square-foot factory outlet at the Junction One outlet mall in Antrim, Northern Ireland, this Friday. It will sell footwear, sportswear and accessories with at least 30% off high street prices. More than 3.5 million people have visited Phase One of Junction One center in its first 16 months.
Several industry execs made Forbes list of the 400 richest Americans. Nike's Phil Knight came in #31 with an estimated worth of $6.9 billion. Jim Jannard, founder of Oakley, is said to be worth $1.5 billion, as is Helen Johnson-Leipold, Johnson Outdoors (both #207). Johnson's net worth is very much the result of her family's stake in SC Johnson. Reebok's Paul Fireman turned up as #346 with an estimated net worth of $1.0 billion.
Harris Nesbitt upgraded Dick's to outperform from neutral. It also downgraded Sports Authority to neutral from outperform.
