Footwear Companies Should Fight EU Duties

FEBRUARY 22, 2006 -- ISG just received this note from Andre Gorgemans, secretary general of the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry, who felt some footwear companies may take the postential tariffs regarding on leather footwear from China and Vietnam too lightly.

"Actually, the proposed duty, around 20%, is very low, probably the lowest ever proposed when none of the companies were granted market economy status," he said. "We're actually concerned that many of the companies might stop fighting this if the duty is not too bothersome. I understand that the EU importers have said that they could live with 20% duties."
