PacSun December Sales Up 16%
Pacific Sunwear of California reported that total sales for the five weeks of December were $218.3 million, an increase of 16.4%. Company same-store sales increased 5.3% for the comparable five-week period ended January 1, 2005. PacSun same-store sales increased 5.0% and d.e.m.o. same-store sales increased 8.3%.
YTD sales were $1,162.9 million, an increase of 18.0%. Company same-store sales increased 7.3% with PacSun same-store sales up 7.5% and d.e.m.o. same-store sales up 5.6%.
Shoe Carnival's December Comps Up 1.1%
Shoe Carnival's December sales increased 6.4% to $64.3 million. Comp-store sales increased 1.1% for the five-week period. Analysts were expecting the company to post a same-store sales boost of 0.5%. Sales for the first 11 months of 2004 increased 5.4% to $555.8 million. Comp-store sales decreased 1.2% for the 48-week period.
Famous Footwear Had Strong December
December sales at Brown Shoe's Famous Footwear, the 926-store chain, increased 7.1% to $119.8 million. Same-store sales were up 2.0%. "December sales at Famous Footwear continued positive and our financial performance was on-plan. Category highlights included athletics, where fashion and classic styles again drove momentum. We also saw strength in the kids' category, as consumers responded well to our assortment of branded kids' shoes from top makers," said Brown Shoe COB/CEO Ron Fromm.

Dick's is closing one of its two stores in Greenwood, IN. The 82,000-square-foot store was a former Galyans Sports & Outdoor store. It opened in May 2003. The store is very close to a new Dick's store.

The NY City Council passed a bill making it easier for victims of gun crimes in the city or their survivors to sue gun manufacturers and dealers, holding them responsible for the injuries. The trade would be held to a code of conduct. One element forbids the sale of more than one gun a month to any individual. Since most guns used in crimes are found to come from several Southern states, the effect of the new law might be limited.
